Timeline:

  • 1902: The Wright Brothers were the first to achieve sustained flight
  • 1911: First Licensed Commercial Aircraft Manufacturer: Burgess Company Opens
  • 1923: First Nonstop transcontinental Flight completed
  • 1933: United Airways offers transatlantic flights- the flight lasted 20 hours
  • 1936: Pan Am begins offering transpacific flights
  • 1952: First commercial jet airliner is flown- the De Havilland Comet
  • 1964: The first private jet was the learjet 23, which came on the market in 1964
  • 1970: Pan Am begins using the Boeing 747
  • 1978: Airline Deregulation Act is signed into law- the government no longer controls fare or routes. (Considered a turning point because airlines started cutting space and amenities in order to cut cost to offer the most cost competitive ticket prices)
  • 1995: First airline tickets sold on the internet
  • 1999: First web-based passenger check-in and online boarding passes
  • 2011: First Biofuel powered flight by Lufthansa
